What To Wear For Your Edmonton Fall Family Portraits

August 29, 2018

Edmonton Fall Family Portraits

Fall has to be one of my absolute favorite times of the year. The crisp mornings, visits to apple orchards, warm sweaters, and of course – those colors!

There’s no surprise that it’s one of the most popular times of the year for Edmonton Fall Family Portraits.

As such, I’ve put together a what-to-wear guide that should help you figure out what you should be wearing to your fall family portraits. I know it’s one of the most stressful parts of booking a session- but I hope to make it a bit easier for you.

Lots Of Layers

It’s fall, and one of the best parts about fall is being cozy! Lots of layers are great not only because the weather is changing, but also because it gives your wardrobe some variety.

In contrast, a single t-shirt is a bit boring and doesn’t give us variety.

So when planning your wardrobe think in layers.

And if you’re concerned about how to put pieces together, have no fear! Pinterest is great for finding ideas for what to wear to family portraits and how to put together nice layering pieces. I’ve even put together a Pinterest board just about what to wear for fall family portraits too, and you can find it here.

Here’s an example of a family that did a good job with layering that added a lot of really great variety.  The kids both have jackets they’ve worn at various parts during the session, and the mom has a really vibrant sweater as well.

The different layers not only add more color but also gives their wardrobe variety just by taking off/putting on a sweater or jacket. They also brought a blanket that tied all the colors together.

Accessorize Your Edmonton Fall Family Portraits

Lots of simple accessories like scarves, jewelry, and jackets are awesome, as well as fun socks and shoes. I love different rich textures all put together to give your images that extra bit of interest.

It’s easiest to dress adults in simpler styles and layers while letting the kid’s clothing and accessories pull the color palette together.

I also like hair down as opposed to all up, it gives another dimension to images, especially if we have a bit of wind. Which, in the fall, is very likely!

Here’s a few examples of some cute accessories, jackets, and jewelry that really added a little bit of fun or elegance to the wardrobe choices.

Coordinate and Complement

I’m not a huge fan of wearing lots of black to a portrait session- plus, if you’re all wearing the same color, it can look unfortunately bland.

Instead, try pulling together 3-4 colors (especially if they’re Fall colors!) and working your wardrobe around those colors.

It’s not too matchy-matchy, but it still makes you all look like you belong together.

And again, if you’re struggling with coming up with a color palette, check out my board on Pinterest. There are some great ideas and inspiration for pulling together outfits for family portraits.

Here are a couple examples of color palettes that complement each other well and also play perfectly into the beautiful fall colors.

Stay Away From Branded Clothing

Branded clothes really bring your eye to the slogan and distract from the real focus of the photo – your family and the gorgeous fall colors.

This doesn’t mean you have to stay away from clothing with any writing on it – in fact, shirts with funny or cute slogans can be good for layering and showing off your personality simultaneously.

Even though the family below is utilizing a lot of colors, patterns, and textures, yet doesn’t draw the eye or distract the viewer as much as logos.

Play Up Your Personalities!

My goal as a lifestyle photographer is to capture who you and your family are, and your lifestyle. The more you can show off your personality in your photos, the more your images will truly reflect who you are as a family.

If you’re bright and bubbly, exaggerate it with your choice of fun and bright-toned clothing. If you like more of a modern style, wear your best.

Use your clothes as an extension of your personality and have some fun!

Here’s an amazing example of a family who used their wardrobe choice to really play up their personalities.

So don’t stress about your clothing!  I love walking my clients through choosing what to wear- just send me over a quick flay lay of your selections.  We can work together to achieve the best results for your family’s lifestyle session during Edmonton’s quickly approaching fall.
